Our Origins

When the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission on January 21st, 2010, many groups and individuals across the Chicago area, as well as the rest of Illinois, began mobilizing in living rooms, libraries, and coffee shops to fight that radically antidemocratic decision. The Coalition to Restore Democracy (formerly the Illinois Coalition to Overturn Citizens United) formed in 2011 as a spontaneous expression of grassroots citizen opposition to Citizens United and other judicial rulings such as Speechnow.org v. FEC and the more recent McCutcheon v. FEC, which have immensely compounded the problem of big money corruption of our elections and our government. Because we know that the fight to overturn Citizens United and its underlying legal doctrines will be a long one, we are committed to building and growing a coalition that will persevere.
